U2 - rock intro to the topic of my next article / in ENGLISH language
How is it to be in someone else's mind and become someone else?
(Rock
introduction to the topic of my next post)
U2
(Note: This is my comment on one specific detail about these
people, not the band's music criticism and I do not even want to be a rock
critic.)
Their world-wide concert tour ZOO TV from 1992 to 1993 is
probably so far the unabridged multimedia spectacle of some rock group. If not
by quality, then certainly by ambition. It included everything from pirate
video streaming, allusions to the fall of communism and the Berlin Wall with
specially decorated GDR trabant car, all the way to the satellite video
connection with Sarajevo, then under the war siege. You can read more about it
on the web. The detail that is particularly interesting here is unrelated to
politics. Bono Vox was then masquerading as a rock egomaniac, a televangelist
and even a devil, trying to escape as far as possible from the then serious
political engagement of the Irish rock group U2.
At that time, Bono said, "all through the 80's we tried to
be ourselves and failed when the lights were on... We decided to have some fun
being other people, or at least other versions of ourselves." Bono would
stay in his acted character even out of the concert stage, explaining that
these cracked characters gave him the freedom to say things that he would not
dare to say as Paul Hewson aka Bono Vox.
These two strictly distinct categories of music are also the
main characteristics of the band U2. I do not know any of the world famous
bands whose songs can be so clearly divided into two types. Those engaged for
something, not necessarily political (Sunday Bloody Sunday, One, Pride, Gloria...)
and those hedonistically arrogant (Vertigo, Elevation, Mysterious Ways, Even
Better Than The Real Thing...) Other rockers soon become boring as they behave
predictably and once when they succeed, each day they make a new copy of that
same hit hoping that this next song will repeat the same success. So they
remain humanists or hedonists in public, all through the life. Only U2 manages
to have both faces. Each song is either on one or the other side as if it were
two quite different bands.
Dear readers, do you also need to put a mask on your face each
time you want to say what you really want? In other words, that you could say
what you don't dare to say under your righteous face and identity?
The final question. You already know all about them and if U2
was a capitalist corporation, U2 would be…

b) UN
