Žumberak and Bela Krajina - the land of uskoks
After several monthly articles in which I wrote about HISTORY and FUTURISM on Žumberak, this is a good opportunity to write something about the PRESENT TIME of Žumberak.
Yesterday, the opening ceremony of the Croatian branch of the KRABAT association was held at the home of the DVD (firemen's home) of the place Sošice in Žumberak. The local meeting place which also serves as the traditional home for social and cultural events in Žumberak region. Guests from Germany and Slovenia came here, (the smaller part of the Žumberak region is located in the territory of Slovenia, under the name Gorjanci, in the wider region of Bela Krajina, that could be roughly translated as "White Border Area"). As the name of this region suggests, Bela Krajina in Slovenia was also a part of then military bordering area of uskoks from Žumberak in the defense of Habsburg Monarchy and this part of Croatia from the Turkish attacks for several centuries (approximately, from the late 16th to early 19th centuries). As you can see in these pictures, guests of this ceremony could pass the area around Sošice on traditional horses and chariots from this area, which are the 19th century Žumberak tradition.
Mrs. Monika Bračika is a very active member in promoting cultural connections of the Žumberak region with the Krabat tourist region in the east of Germany. Mrs. Bračika, born Šajatović, has the same familiar origin as the legendary medieval knight from Žumberak, Janko Šajatović or Johannes Schadowitz (1624-1704), in Germany called KRABAT. I met there the German artist Joerg Tausch who is also actively working on the Krabat project, and has already made a sculpture of this man that became in Germany, especially in the 19 century, a hero from folk tales possessing magical skills. Mr. Tausch has also collaborated on the visual forming of Krabat character, for the popular history book in Germany.
One winter photo of Monica Bračika in military uniform. Mrs. Bračika is actively working on the tourist promotion of Žumberak. You can read (in Croatian language) on

German artist Joerg Tausch was also a guest at Žumberak yesterday, and this is his Krabat sculpture and a history book about Krabat, a popular legendary character in Germany. More about Mr. Tausch art work on the Krabat project as well as other projects can be found on his website http://www.stuck-arts.de/?p=2059
A sympathetic boy in front of the culture home in Sošice wore a “house of welcome” with a raven on the roof (family coat of arms of Krabat)
German guests brought us products from their region named by Krabat, green beer and some other alimentary products.
After that we also visited that place in the village of Badovinci, where there is a monument near the church and the medieval church cemetery, with the coats of arms of the Žumberak families of uskoks. Just last month I placed one picture on the blog where you can see all these coats of arms in close distance, and in this a photo where are my mother Dragica and my cousin Saša.

Dear Igor, thank you for this blog but please allow me one correction regarding the books. They are definately not comics. Those books are serious history books, which are a result of app 10 years of research by Mr Schröter and several history experts from Germany. Some of them work in the national museum in Dresden and the sorbian museum in Bautzen. Both books were issued for the museum exhibition Krabat: man.mythos.brand from September 15th, 2017 till April 15th, 2018. in Bautzen, which was a very big success. Thousends of people got to know how the legend Krabat is connected to the real life of Janko Šajatovic (Johannes von Schadowitz). Fantastic science books with a lot of important data from museum archives Dresden, Berlin, .
OdgovoriIzbrišiThe Krabat Pils and the black beer Schwarze Müller was bought and picked up by me personally in Wittichenau. The new established assosiation Udruga Krabat from Zumberak baught it for the opening and its guests in Sosice. More about the bruwery you can read here: https://www.wittichenauer.de/ . The green beer is from Slovenia and again a result of a expert researcher from the slovene region at the hungarina border. The green beer is produced due to a 400 years old czech recipt. We have proof that 400 years ago, beer was green.
