Big, classic novels connected with Žumberak.
Although we can not be say that Žumberak has its own Jane Austen or the Bronte sisters, as some English local regions, something that has defined the whole standard of Croatian literature from small, rural areas, Žumberak is still partially connected with the masterworks of the greatest Croatian writers.
It is especially interesting here to show the August Šenoa's novel “Čuvaj se senjske ruke” (“Beware of the uskoks from Senj”, translated in German as “Piraten von Senj”).
In addition to August Šenoa (1838-1881), the greatest Croatian writer 19th century who had numerous ties to Žumberak, from friendships to literary inspiration, it is less known that the greatest Croatian writer of the 20th century, Miroslav Krleža (1893-1981) also had ties to Žumberak. Krleža is just like Šenoa, born and lived in the metropolitan city of Zagreb. Unlike Šenoa, whose ancestors moved to Croatia from the Czech Republic, Krleža's family lived in Zagreb for generations, the first Krleža was mentioned in the 17th century. However, it is believed that the origin of his last name is from around the northwest of Zagreb along the Slovenian border. It is therefore not strange that Krleža put the plot of his most famous novel "The Return of Philip Latinovicz" in a small place called Kostanjevac.
This psychological novel speaks of an artist, a painter returning to his mother's birthplace and undergoing a creative crisis after achieved successes in Europe. There he went as a poor student and came back as a successful, respected artist. He examins himself and his motives and through encounters and love adventures with local, unusual people Philip is trying to get back to the original nature and find a new motivation for painting.
Besides Miroslav Krleža, there are still many other writers from this region, like Janko Matko, (not so famous abroad, but very often read and popular writers in Croatia) who placed the plots of their novels, directly or indirectly, in Žumberak. I will write more about it another time.

It is especially interesting here to show the August Šenoa's novel “Čuvaj se senjske ruke” (“Beware of the uskoks from Senj”, translated in German as “Piraten von Senj”).
This
historical novel particularly describes the life and struggle of the
uskoks from Senj against The Venetian Republic in the first half of
the 17th century with the competitive Venetian Republic. Later these
uskoks were being continuously settled to the Žumberak area, through
the 16th and 17th century, on the command of Austrian emperors. In
Žumberak they continued to be border soldiers defending the Austrian
multinational empire from the Otoman Turkish attacks.

Šenoa as excursionist spent much time in Zumberak, so he wrote a
Latinised poem for his friend Tadija Smičiklas, well-known Croatian
historian, born in Žumberak. Šenoa in this poem even called him
"Croatian Herodotus".

By the way, Kostanjevac is a place of municipal administration for the entire Žumberak and is located only 1 kilometer away from hostel Flores in Jurkovo Selo.
Its name comes from an archaic Croatian word kostanj which means chestnut, that the forests of Žumberak nature are rich of. There is no evidence that the Krleža in his novel deliberately meant this Kostanjevac in Žumberak, for example around Varaždin, northeast of Zagreb, there is a toponym Kostanjevec ("e" instead of "a"), and in the novel Krleža often mentions places from eastern regions Podravina and Slavonia, which are quite distant from its local area that he knows best. However, Krleža often deliberately placed the plot of his fictional novels and dramas in small provincial places of Croatia, deliberately giving fictional names, and it is quite probable that the very Kostanjevac in Žumberak influenced the writer to invent this "imaginary" name. Namely, the whole Krleža's opus was influenced mostly by the local culture of the region north and west of Zagreb, and so he wrote in Kajkavian, the North Croatian dialect, "The Ballads of Petrica Kerempuh" his masterwork of poetry. The literary figure Petrica Kerempuh is for many centuries traditional, Croatian version of Till Eulenspiegel. So he is a folk entertainer with a guitar, a trickster and a buffoon. Simple man from the common people who ridicules and criticizes powerful men and rulers.
